Day 38

The Big Dish- Creeping Up On Jesus
Black Sabbath- Born Again

I guess it was around 1988 when I was 15, that I started to realize that there was other really good music out there other than metal. Three albums that came out around this time that did it for me. Springsteen's Tunnel of Love Danny Wilde's Any Man's Hunger and the Bodeans Home. It sort of opened up a whole new world to me. I also consider the Summer of '88 to be one of my all time favorites.
And thanks to late night summer MTV, I was introduced to a whole slew of under the radar indie pop bands like The Big Dish, Red House, Del Amitri, Little America, etc, etc,.
So I was pretty happy to find this record in the Half Price grab box. It's definitely not a great record by any means, but brings back memories. It's a little synthesizer heavy and a song like "European Rain" is pure crap. But first track "Life" and closing number "Where Do You Live" are pure gems. I'm not really sure whatever happened to these guys, but it's nice to include this record in my collection.

Ok, now for Black Sabbath. I just found this record today at the Citywide Garage Sale for $2. Talk about great timing! And this is the first time I'm ever hearing this record. I've always been intrigued by it since it's the only Sabbath record with Ian Gillian on lead vocals. Love Gillian's voice. I guess he split after this record to join the classic Deep Purple lineup on '84's "Perfect Strangers". Which, by the way, is my all time favorite Deep Purple record. More on that later.
I'm really digging this record. Iommi's guitar playing songs awesome. Really cool riffs.
I just read that it was panned by critics when it was released, but fuck 'em I think it's cool. That being said, it's no Ozzy or Dio era Sabbath. Ha! I also just read that the song "Digital Bitch" was inspired by Sharon Osbourne. Was she ever liked?
Unfortunately, this is the only Sabbath record I have on vinyl. I did see a copy of Seventh Star at Half Price the other day, but passed on it. Not sure why I did, I'm pretty sure I'll go back and pick it up next time I'm over that way. Shit, maybe I should do that tomorrow since it would be next up to listen to if I owned it. Damnit!
