Day 167

Steve Earle- Copperhead Road

Like I said last night, this is the most metal country album ever. Just look at the album cover with the skull and crossbones. If you've never heard this album, you know it's going to be good as soon as you hear the bagpipes at the beginning of "Copperhead Road". Then, once the drums kick in, it's impossible not to rock out to this song.

I got this album back in '88 solely based on the video and thinking, "Man, this Steve Earle guy is a bad ass. " Long hair, beard, looks that say he can pummel you. He looked a whole lot more metal than most so called metal bands back in the 80's. With all the trouble this guy has been in with heroin and prison time, he rivals Keith Richards for being a bad ass and surviving to tell about it. I need to get his book too.

The rest of this album is great too. While I was listening to it, I started to wonder where I would place it if I made a Top 10 albums list for 1988. I didn't really give it much thought, but I may revisit that idea along with other albums too. I think it would be fun.

Another song on here I dig a lot is "Johnny Come Lately". He got the Pogues to be his back up band on this track! Man, can you imagine that session? Steve Earle and Shane McGowan playing together? Whoa. The ballads on here on killer, too. I can listen to a tune like "Waiting On You" on repeat. The only song that I really don't care for is the album closer, "Nothing But A Child". I don't want to hear a "lullaby" about Jesus from a heroin addict. Pass.
