Day 298

Eric Johnson- Tones

This album sounds a little dated now that I'm listening to it 25 years after it's release, but I still dig it. Even though this album came out in 1986, it was around 1990 that I first started to get into Eric Johnson. Q102 up in Dallas used to play "Zap" a lot and that song still rules today.

I guess for those of you who don't know who Eric Johnson is, he's an Austin, TX guitar virtuoso. But what I like better about him over guys like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani is that he's not wailing on the guitar trying to do all these crazy scales and playing super fast. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but he's got more soul to his playing. Plus he's a helluva lot better vocalist that Satriani is. Oy, remember that one album where Satch tried to sing? Damn that was brutal.

I only have two of Eric Johnson's solo albums. This and Ah Via Musicom. I really would like to get more of his work including his earlier bands Alien Love Child and Electromagnets, but no idea if there even available on vinyl.

This clip is pretty awesome. Makes me want to go see him live again.
