Day 314

The Judds- Greatest Hits

Surprised I own this one? Kinda weird that it comes right after Judas Priest, but up until now, The Judds were always a guilty pleasure. C'mon now, "Mama He's Crazy"? That's good stuff. But this record is all the Judds I need.

I actually blame CMT for making me a Judds fan. When I was working at a record store throughout the 90's, I would watch Country Music Television quite a bit as homework. I live in Texas, so I had to keep up with what the customers were asking for. Most of it was pure crap (Garth Brooks, etc), but a few /artists stuck with me besides the Judds like Steve Wariner, Marty Stuart and Dwight Yoakum. I think theses acts were also the last wave of "real" country. Most of the 90's on stuff is up is pure crap and should be ashamed of calling themselves country music. It's pop music with a twang and a cowboy hat.

So I guess what I'm saying is I have a sprinkling of 80's/early 90's country music throughout my collection. It's good to mix it up a bit.

Oh and I'm finally done with the J's! I can't think of much that I'm missing, but I'd love to get some Japancakes on vinyl if it even exists. And some Jesu.

Day 313

Judas Priest- Screaming For Vengeance

Just when I said I was going to start blogging regularly again, tragedy struck. My dog for the last 12 years passed away last Saturday. She wasn't only "just" my dog, but also really was my best friend. During those 12 years, I fell to the lowest of lows, but the one constant of hope, joy and optimism was her. There really were days where I didn't know how I would go on without her in my life. I owe her so much. I can only hope that I made her as happy as she made me.

Jessica and I knew this day was coming for quite some time and we agreed to get a new dog very shortly after she passed. After spending one of the worst weeks of my life grieving over her, we adopted a new dog yesterday. She's a chihuahua/terrier mix and only 10 months old. We already love her and are happy with our decision, but we still miss KW terribly and I personally know I always will. No dog will ever mean as much to me as her. Sorry, Choji! Although these last two days with Choji have been a pleasant distraction, I still find myself constantly talking and thinking about KW. Choji has a lot to live up to.

Yesterday before picking up Choji at the shelter, I laid down and listened to this album. For me, it was the Priest album. My brother owned it when I was 10 or so, and we played it all the time. Even though I only own two Priest records, there was no doubt that this had to be one of them.

Sorry for not talking more about this album. But writing about my dog feels more important to write about now.

Day 312

Judas Priest- Stained Class

I'm ashamed to admit that I only own two Judas Priest records. This one and Screaming For Vengeance. I've gone to the stores repeatedly looking for more Priest records, but the only used ones I ever find are Ram It Down and Turbo. The completist in me always tells me to buy these records, but the realist in me reminds me that both those records kinda suck. Really record stores, mark these records down to a $1 each.

But I really am a Priest fan. I'll take Iron Maiden over them any day of the week, but Judas Priest have always been high on my list of metal goodness. I was pretty disappointed when I read that K.K. Downing left the band. That's what prevented me from going to see them the last time they came through Texas. K.K. was always my favorite. To me it's the same as when Rob Halford left the band back in the 90's and they got Tim "Ripper" Owens to sing for them. C'mon, nobody wants to see or hear that shit!

Stained Class is a great record that I never owned as a kid. Not sure why that is. I know most of these songs somehow though. Must have been played a lot at some dude's house I used to hang out at. My favorite tune on the record is "Better By You Better Than Me" followed by "Exciter". But one song that surprised me by it's awesomeness is "Beyond The Realms of Death". Highly recommend you buy this record if you don't already own it.

Day 311

Journey-Frontiers

I've finally gotten around to finishing up Journey. It's only taken 6 weeks!

I had this record when I was a kid, but I don't remember Side 2 being so awful. It's like they are intentionally trying to be "hard", but it's not working at all. I can't imagine many of their newer fans at the time digging this. Maybe the older ones could appreciate it.

But Side 1 is good stuff. Leading off with "Separate Ways" which is a good tune that I would probably like better if I didn't think of the crappy video they made for it. Jonathan Cain invented air keyboards in that video.

Rest of the tunes on Side 1 are really good stuff too and what you want to hear after after loving the Escape album so much. "Send Her My Love", "Chain Reaction", "After The Fall", and super weepy ballad, "Faithfully" which I personally think is better than "Open Arms". That's also a classic video. I love it when Steve Perry sadly looks into the mirror before shaving off his mustache. Ha, good stuff.

I'm posting both videos for your viewing pleasure.

Day 310

Journey- Escape

Forget about me? That's alright, I almost gave up, but am re-energized to see this through.

There's been a lot that's happened since the last time I posted on September 24th. For one, I'm now a married man! Our wedding was awesome and I'm one lucky dude. It was great to have all of our families and friends from out of town to come in to share our wonderful day with us.

So yeah, with that and going to Vegas and being busy at work and needing to catch up with all my stories on the tube, I pretty much neglected this blog. I'd love to promise that I'm going to do one every night for the rest of the year, but I just don't see that happening. I will at least do a few a week though.

Another reason that I was hesitant to get back on the blog was that I knew I still had some Journey to finish. I'm not hating on Journey, I just haven't been in the mood to listen to it. Especially since my all time favorite band, Wilco put out there new album too. I've been wanting to listen to that instead of anything else. Oh, and the new Sam Llanas CD. It's pretty damn good.

I'm not going to talk about this record. If you don't know about it already, then you just don't know Journey. Good to be back. The first one back is always the toughest.
